How to choose a living room rug
Start with the size. A living room rug should be big enough for the front legs of your sofa and chairs to rest on it, which usually means an 8x10, an 8x11 or a 9x12. In a smaller room, a 5x8 or 6x9 under the coffee table and the front of the sofa also works. Size names are rounded, so check the actual size shown under Size on each rug.
What size rug for a living room?
Measure your seating area and leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Our guide to placing a rug in your living room and our measuring guide walk through it, or browse 8x10 rugs and 8x11 rugs.
Which style suits my living room?
Choose a contemporary or geometric rug for a modern room, a traditional rug for classic furniture, and a boho rug for a relaxed look. Neutral rugs in cream, beige and grey work with most sofas, and a bold colour gives the room a focal point.
Do I need a rug pad?
A rug pad keeps a large rug in place and adds cushion underfoot.
